The first lady of the Republic, Her Excellency Madam Zenab Yahya Jammeh has again rendered support to the health sector by donating biomedical equipment to leading hospitals in the country like the RVTH, Bansang Hospital, AFPRC General Hospital, JFP Hospital among others. Her latest gesture comes at the right time considering the importance the government of The Gambia under the dynamic leadership of her husband attaches to the health sector.

We all know that a healthy nation is a wealthy nation. The most beautiful aspect of the donation is that the items are meant for key departments located in the beneficiary health facilities such as internal medicine, surgery including operating theatre, obstetrics and gynecology, radiology and laboratory.

Madam Jammeh's intervention is a worthy cause that deserves to be emulated by all Gambians. It is an indication of her tireless commitment to development of The Gambia, because health is considered to be amongst the most critical and important sector in any country.

Her Excellency the first lady has proven to be a pragmatic lady who matches her words with action. She is also actively playing her role as a member of the African First Ladies, an association formed 10 years ago, which aims among other things, to unite first ladies in the continent to enable them act in their capacities as advocates in the fight against maternal, new-born and child mortality, as well as prevent child-mother and HIV infection.

We commend Madam Jammeh for her untiring efforts to ensure that the country realises its health targets. There is no doubt that her gesture would go a long way in serving as a catalyst for the sustainable development of the country. We also hope that other women would emulate her.
