Kenya: Truth Team Trains Statement Takers

Nairobi — Training started on Tuesday of people who will take down statement evidence from those who have suffered gross human rights violation.

The 300 trainees will be required gather information on atrocities committed between December 12, 1963 to February 28 2008.

They will be trained on human rights and trauma management before they begin collecting information for the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission.

"The team will collect primary data from those affected by the post-election violence and whose rights were violated," a commissioner Margaret Shava said.

Recruited from communities

After the three-day workshop, they will take an oath before meeting people whose rights were violated as well as the violators in their respective areas.

"We recruited them from the communities they are familiar with," Mrs Shava said, noting that the commission, rocked by a crisis after critics called on chairman Bethuel Kiplagat to quit, was ready to begin its work.

"These individuals will be issued with recorders and other equipment for their two-month assignment," Mrs Shava said. Gender and disability were considered when choosing the participants.
