Ghana: Carelink Donates Books to Schools

CARELINK AFRICA, Inc. a charitable, religious and educational non-profit organization which seeks to serve as an agent of change by promoting socio-economic development through advocacy, technical support, educational and financial aid, has donated various books to a number of schools in the Volta and Greater Accra Regions in Ghana.

The books, worth over GH¢3,000 were donated to Battor Senior High School (SHS), Mepe Presbyterian Junior High School (JHS), Bator St. Kizito R.C. JHS and Ada Secondary-Technical SHS, Sege.

Presenting the books, Rev. Sylvanus Elorm, Vice President of Care link, said education, which is the key to development, must be paramount in every town and village.

He lamented that despite efforts by government to make education virtually free, many youth of school-going age in the country are on the streets, stressing that even those in the classrooms cannot access simple learning materials due to poverty.

Rev. Elorm described the presentation of the books to the four schools as the beginning of greater things to come and urged the school authorities to take good care of them.

He advised students to cultivate the reading habit to improve the English language, gain more knowledge and prepare themselves for a better future.

Rev. Elorm asked them not to engage in examination malpractices.

The headmaster of Mepe Presby JHS, James Klakani Chubby, on behalf of the church, said the donation would supplement the school's library and appealed for more assistance.

Â"It is unfortunate that the package did not include Information Communication Technology (ICT) books to enhance teaching of the subject. I am therefore passionately appealing to your outfit to support us with books and personal computers to facilitate the teaching and learning of the subject.

For his part, the headmaster of Battor SHS said: Â"The books have been of great benefit to the school, students and teachers. While students borrowed some, masters also got some on loan for their references. Students now express themselves very well whenever Inter-School debates and quizzes are conducted among schools in the North Tongu District. The books helped a lot and enabled the school to perform and excel in almost every competition in the district.Â"

Carelink Africa, Inc envisages an African society that would provide social support for the underprivileged children, youth, and adults.

It is currently working with the local school districts, churches and community leaders in Ghana to provide support and hopes to expand its outreach programmes through different advocacy groups, donors and foundations to meet the needs of many people.
