Uganda: Poor Funding Cripples Health Sector - Report

The health sector conditions have continuously declined due to inadequate funding, the healthcare report released by the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative has revealed.

The report that was launched yesterday in Kampala stated that the Shs734 billion allocated to the ministry last financial year, falls short of the 15 per cent minimum government commitment made in the Abuja Declaration by African Union States.

The acting director General of Health services, Dr Kenya Mugisha, said the health system is worsening especially up-country because the health budget has not addressed the growing population.

The report says that although statistics indicate increasing health facilities annually, infrastructure is still severely lacking. "Patients wards and beds are insufficient which leads to compromise in the services offered."
