Kenya: UK Deputy Premier Lauds Kenya Over New Law

Nairobi — The British deputy prime minister has congratulated Kenya for successfully adopting a new constitution.

In a statement issued by his office on Friday, Mr Nick Clegg on behalf of the British people and government applauded Kenya for achieving a momentous milestone towards its constitution reform agenda.

"I warmly congratulate Kenya on the promulgation of a new Constitution. This is a significant milestone and a proud time for Kenyans," he stated.

Mr Clegg said that it was a memorable achievement for Kenya's Coalition Government.

He also commended the leadership shown by President Kibaki and Prime Minister Odinga, and the Kenyans who contributed over the years towards this historic moment.

"I welcome the renewed sense of confidence this Constitution offers for the country's future. Alongside progress on other reforms set out in the National Accord, implementation in the spirit of its founding principles will help Kenya achieve its Vision 2030 of becoming a more prosperous, secure and dynamic country, and a flourishing regional hub," he said.

He assured Kenya of support from the British government once the constitution fully comes into effect. "As a long standing friend and partner, the UK is committed to supporting the reforms that will bring that reality closer," he stated.

Kenya is celebrating a new dawn today which drew about six heads of State, former presidents and dignitaries who turned up to witness the historic ceremony at Uhuru Park, Nairobi.

The ceremony saw the President Mwai Kibaki, Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and Evans Gicheru the Chief Justice take a fresh oath of allegiance to the new constitution which was administered by the head of civil service Ambassador Francis Muthaura.
