Malawi: Mutharika Threatens to Shut Media Houses

Nairobi — Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika has threatened to close down any media house that reports negative stories about his government, especially about the looming hunger that threatens over a million people.

Mutharika made the threats on Thursday afternoon during the opening of the seventh National Agriculture Fair at the Trade Fair grounds in Blantyre, Malawi's commercial city.

He said he was going to close down any media house that is involved in false reportage and that he will arrest any editor whose newspaper wrote anything negative about the government.
