The Federal Government has restored its envoy in Libya, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Sunday in Abuja.

Amb. Isah Mohammed was recalled in March in the wake of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's call for the splitting of Nigeria along religious lines.

The ministry's Permanent Secretary, Amb. Martins Uhomoibhi, said relations between Nigeria and Libya had been strengthened, "as we have restored our envoy and Libya will do the same".

The perm sec later told Daily Trust on phone that the development followed months of negotiations between the two African countries.

He said while the Nigerian envoy has since returned to Tripoli, the Libyan envoy is expected in Abuja anytime soon.

On the government's intervention regarding Nigerians on death row in Libya, Uhomoibhi said consultations on how to peacefully address consular challenges between both countries were underway.

"We will remain positive and constructive in our efforts to address these consular problems," he said.

The permanent secretary also said the Federal Government was committed to reviewing its bi-national agreements with other countries while promoting its "citizen diplomacy" at the same time.

The ministry, he said, had constituted a committee to review the nation's 68 bi-national agreements.

"We want to, among others, ascertain the progress achieved so far in these agreements."
