Nigeria: Amun Raises Questions on NFF Polls

Defeated candidate for the vice-presidency of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Fanny Amun, has expressed reservations over the association's polls, hinting that a lot of water passed under bridge leading to the elections.

Amun polled three votes in an election won by Mike Umeh, who received 26 votes."What has transpired in the emergence of the present board is to ask yourself what were the hindrances or predicaments of the Electoral Committee? What were the hindrances to the (NFF) secretariat and who came and bailed them out? And what were the predicaments of some of us? Who came and bail them out? I won't reveal the details," said Amun.

"My ears were hot on ground and I know what I am talking about. So, the question is who bailed them (NFF) out from the hindrances that would have stopped the election from holding.

"Were there any transactions or what? Like I said I reserved my comment."

The dissatisfied former NFF secretary-general further said the fallout of the elections are yet to manifest.

"The election has come and gone but what follows after I can not guarantee," he said.

On whether he will support the newly elected board of the NFF, the former Golden Eaglets coach who won the 1993 FIFA U-17 World Cup simply answered, "No comments."

In the meantime, the chairman of the NFF electoral committee, Abdulhakeem Mustapha, has said the polls were part of the learning process for Nigerian football.

"I would say controversy is part of life. Football is a media affair. Football provokes a lot of emotions and interest. So I see people's reactions and opinions as part of the process. But for me we should not throw the baby and the water away," Mustapha told MTNFootball.com.

"There is no system that is perfect. We can improve on the system but we should not because of our inordinate ambitions try to wreck havoc and destroy the house that all of us look up to."

Mustapha urged the Nigerian football family to now unite and forge ahead.

"My plea to the losers and winners is that we have come a long way. Football is a big business. Football is the only thing that unifies us so they should please put the interest of football and by extension the interest of Nigerians uppermost in their minds if they are serious about developing football," he enjoined.
