A Liberia Lecturer at the Baptist Theological Seminary, Mr. Luther Tarpeh has underscored the importance of ethical financial management in the development of post war Liberia and called on non-governmental organizations to establish a fiscal and economic policy environment that would be favorable for donor assistance.
Mr. Tarpeh said it was sad to note that the goodwill of the international partners has been and continue to be abused by Liberians for reasons he named as uncontrollable selfishness and greed.
The Baptist lecturer made the statement on August 25, 2010, when he addressed the opening of a three-day capacity building workshop organized by the Liberian Education Trust-Monrovia. (LET-M)
Liberia Education Trust is a grant making organization that is committed at improving Liberian children’s access to quality education with emphasizes on girls and women.
The workshop was aimed at seeking to improve the knowledge and skills of participants,
in project development, business planning, financial management, financial reporting as well as monitoring and evaluation.
Mr. Tarpeh however, indicated that there is no doubt that the country run the risk of getting a tarnished reputation as far as money management is concerned. This practice, he said could inevitably affect the interest of partner to invest in the country and at the same time weakened the country development agenda.
According to him, if Liberian wants to encourage more investor in the country, than, it needs to exhibit the character of maintenance and administration of financial assert in their institutions.
According to the financial expert, for business to maintained ethical financial management, than it needs to cultivate what he described as integrity, honesty, external audit and as well avoidance of superfluous expenditure.
Also, Dr. Evelyn Kandakai, executive director, LET-M revealed that her institution has worked seriously to provide scholarship to female, school constructions, clinic and supporting training of teachers in the country.
Liberian longer serving education Minister, however, disclosed that the workshop was funded with a grant from Wellspring LLC, USA.
She however revealed that at the end of the training participants’ knowledge and skills reference project cycle and financial management would be up scaled.
