New roads, traffic lights, cinema hall are among the investments

The Hawassa Town Administration approved a budget of 156.3 million Br in capital and fixed assets for the 2010/11 budget year, on August 21, 2010.
The administration allocated 28.6 million Br for administrative and other general services, 16.7 million Br for economic development, 90.1 million Br for social development, and 19.5 million Br for the district of Hawela Tula. The administration also set aside 1.3 million Br as a reserve.
Out of the total budget, 1.9 million Br was secured from the regional government, while the remaining was secured from revenues collected by the city municipality during the previous fiscal year, including 3.1 million Br from health institutions, 54.6 million Br from municipal services, and 96 million Br from different income sources.
The municipality, which was allotted 54.7 million Br of the total budget, plans to undertake construction of 20km of cobblestone roads, 50km of gravel access roads, and reconstruction of a four kilometres of damaged drainage systems. It also plans to install traffic lights on over 14km of roads. Construction of an abattoir and a cinema hall are also among the list of activities the municipality plans to undertake in this fiscal year.
As part of the municipality's redevelopment plan, it has set out to reclaim a 16ht plot of land from farmers to be deposited into the land bank.
The municipality has prepared 108ht of land which will be leased to developers and cooperatives for the construction of residences, condos, real estate, investments, and social services, Shibku Mange, manager of the municipality, told Fortune.
