Libya: Kadhafi Causes Controversy on Roman Holiday

Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi's visit to Rome to mark the second anniversary of a friendship treaty with former coloniser Italy turned controversial after he said Europe should convert to Islam.

Kadhafi made the comments Sunday during a lecture to 500 young women hired by an agency to attend. He also handed each woman a copy of the Koran.

Opposition lawmaker and former health minister Rosy Bindi called the lecture "a new, humiliating violation of Italian women's dignity."

Ties between Rome and its former colony have deepened since the signing of a treaty in 2008 that includes a much-criticised immigrant deportation deal that dumps illegal immigrants back in Libya.

Olivier Huang is an immigration specialist and professor of the European University Institute in Florence.

He told RFI the immigration treaty is not as successful as the two countries make it out to be: "There are still some immigrants coming through Libya, and the situation of immigrants in Libya is also not very good, so the issue to be discussed is how to control immigration, as opposed to just banning it through Libya."

i think ghadafi should be attentioned for a psychiatric adjustment. this is getting out of control. am begining to understand better that there is a challenge with his sense of judgement.moreso when he intends to be the president of the united state of africa.he should just forget it.nevertheless i must commend him for his competence associated in the economic stability of his country.

The article does not say what the Libyan leader actually said, which was very derogative toward black africans. Why write such a watered down article and call it controversial, when the controverse is not said?

Are you afraid of Kadhafi? Why this coward behaviour?

yes this is watered down. This is because he has dissapointed the so called hard core pan africanist. He wanted Nigeria to be divided along religious lines. Its about time black africa understand that these people are not our brothers. They are just arabs in africa he has ambitions to be the king of africa thats all.

Wow; why do will like to divide other people by religion and race but not ours. Why a satanic way of doing things. Africans are no more stupid; therefore, North Africans are Africans. Our division of Africa will no more be successful because devided we conquer and destroy as if it the law that we only know how to do best. What a shame. Africa is now United, and she will stay ever United without allowing any more facist ideas. Africa Liberators know what is useful and beneficialry to Africans, divisionism is not one of them.
