Tanzania: Bursary Offer for Dar Es Salaam Athletes

Nakuru — AT least ten players from Tanzanian secondary schools have been approached by a Kenyan University to join the institution on scholarship, after the completion of their form six exams.

The players were identified during the Brookside East Africa Secondary Schools Games that ended in Nakuru, Kenya, on Tuesday. United States International University (USIU) coach Raphael Auka told the 'Daily News' that he was impressed by the standard of the Tanzanian players especially from Kukirango and Filbert Bayi schools.

Auka said the players who must meet a minimum of two (2) principal passes will receive 40 per cent scholarship, besides other financial benefits from the institution to the tune of 25 per cent. Seven players have been picked from Tanzania Mainland and two from Zanzibar; Kukirango secondary school has the bulk of players who have been picked.

Those from the Mainland include Elias Manguli, Mindo Wilson, Sospeter Maige, Robert Magadula, Frank James Sekula, Baraka Andrew and Ali Juma. Those picked from Zanzibar are Issa Juma Khalfan and Yusuf Abdalla.

Meanwhile, two more players from Tanzania are among nine players from the region who have benefited from the 2010 Brookside East Africa soccer scholarship. They are Filbert Bayi's Shaban Moka and Salim Mbonde. Regional schools champions, St. Mary's Kitende of Uganda have three players. Kenya have two while Rwanda and Burundi have one each.

Brookside Dairy will cater for the school fees of the nine students until they complete their studies before being seconded to play for Kenya's premier league club, Thika United which is fully sponsored by Brookside Dairy since 2003.
