Ghana: Cape Coast MP Goes to the Aid of Fishermen

Cape Coast — The Member of Parliament (MP) for Cape Coast, Mr. Ebo Barton Odro, has stated that his interest in becoming an MP is to work and leave behind a good legacy for posterity, and that he will work assiduously to make Cape Coast a better place in the years ahead.

He made this known when he cut the sod for the construction of a multi-purpose shed for the fishermen at Legion Hall, in Cape Coast on Sunday.

Hon. Barton Odro, who won the seat after his third attempt, is not taking things for granted, as he has embarked on a number of initiatives to justify his election. He has been practising law in the Metropolis for a long time.

He said the construction of the shed will enable the fishermen to mend their nets, while an office space would be provided for the chief fisherman to operate in.

Currently, the fishermen mend their nets in the open, close to the Cape Coast Castle, and it is expected that completion of the shed would give shelter to them.

He also donated 164 Chokor Smokers to fishmongers in the area, 700 T-shirts to the seven Asafo Companies and gunpowder to support the celebration of the Oguaa Fetu Afahye, which kicks off on Tuesday with the Bakatue festival (opening of lagoon for fishing) and Canoe Regatta.

The Cape Coast Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr. Anthony Egyir Aikins, called for unity among the people of Cape Coast to ensure the development of the area, since the election was over.

The Central Regional Vice Chairman of National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Samuel Graham Wilberforce, said the government would fulfill its promises to the people so that there would be no need for the NDC to campaign in the 2012 elections.

The Cape Coast Constituency Chairman of NDC, Mr. Christian Elvis Amoasah, reminded the MP of some of the promises made to the fishermen, concerning brake waters to enable them dock at the beach, and assured the people that government wil fulfill its promises one after the other.

The Central Regional Propaganda Secretary, Ben Allotey Jacobs, appealed to the MP to turn Legion Hall, a warehouse used in the World War by the Europeans, into a fish market to sustain the activities of fishmongers.

The occasion was marked with drumming and dancing while some fishermen praised the MP for his vision to improve their lot.

The Acting Chief Fisherman of Cape Coast, Nana Kojo Bo, said the fishermen would help the MP to track down children who failed to attend school during school hours, so as to ensure every child of school going age go to school.
