Eritrea: Micro-Dams in Berikh Sub-Zone Accumulating Sufficient Amount of Water

Berik — The head of the Agricultural Ministry's branch in Berik sub-zone, Mr. Andetsion Zerai, noted the significance of micro-dams in the sub-zone that have already accumulated sufficient volume of water in facilitating the envisaged development activities in the nearby areas.

He explained that about 45 hectares are expected to be put under irrigation farming through the micro-dams. The Ametsi, Adesfeda and Tseazega micro-dams would also play due role in promoting drip irrigation, Mr. Andetsion added.

He went on to say that the micro-dams of Tseazega, Tsaeda-Kristian and Tsaeda-Emba in the sub-zone have been renovated this year, while there are plans to carry out similar renovation activities on the micro-dams of Adi-Habteslus and Adi-Shimagle.

Reports indicated that about 500 milliliters of rain has been recorded in the sub-zone in this year's rainy season, and that farmlands have already been cultivated and seeds sown through modern and traditional methods of farming.

Over 750 quintals of select seeds of wheat and beans have also been distributed to farmers in the sub-zone, the reports added.
