Abuja — The Vice Chancellor of Osun State University, Prof Sola Akinrinade, has described cyber crime as the major challenge facing university campuses now.
Young and intelligent people in university campuses, Akinrinade said are now out to swindle unsuspecting people, pointing out that Osun State University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding MoU with Microsoft Incorporated to fight cyber crime on campuses.
He disclosed this yesterday when he received a peer review team headed by the Director General of the Nigeria Governors' Forum Secretariat, Asishana Okauru, who were assessing the developmental projects of the Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola-led administration.
The vice chancellor said though the university does not work directly with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in fighting cyber crime, Microsoft has a working relationship with the commission.
The university, he said, signed an Internet Safety Protocol with Microsoft linking them with the EFCC. He said Osun State University is driving the initiative to fight cyber crime on campuses.
The tertiary insitution, established in 2007, was the first to sign the safety protocol, stressing that the initiative has been approved by the secretariat of the Association of Vice Chancellors.
On cultism, Akinrinade said it was not peculiar to any institution and it had been well managed in the insitution.
He noted that taking care of students' welfare played a major role in reducing the activities of cultism.
