Lafia — Greenwatch initiative, an implementation partner for Building Nigerian's Response to Climate Change (BNRCC) has begun massive tree planting in Daudu community, sites for the adaptation pilot project in Benue State.
The mass tree planting, according to Greenwatch Initiative boss, Emmanuel Tembe, "is for the sale of high valued seeds, biofuel and for environmental protection.
He said Greenwatch Initiative is also running a two-year project in Benue and Kano states with support funding by the Canadian government through Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Some of the trees planted include Jatropha curcus Gmelina arborea, Tectona grandis and other indigenous species along stream banks, homesteads and barren lands as a deliberate step to reduce the current rate of deforestation in the area arising from exploitation of remaining economic trees for charcoal production, timber, fuel, wood and craft making.
