Nigeria: Confusion in Adamawa As PDP Seeks Redress

Yola — The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State says it would seek redress if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducts governorship election in the state in January 2011 in line with provisions of the amended constitution.

Reacting to pronouncements by INEC that elections would hold in all the states of the federation in January 2011 except in Rivers, Edo, Ondo and Anambra, the state secretary of the party, Mr P.P. Elisha, said there seemed to be foul-play in the whole process.

"Why should there be backdating in the new electoral act. So we are wondering why the amendment should affect Nyako's re-election," he said.

Mr Elisha noted that the state chapter of the party would soon consult its lawyers for necessary action on the matter while calling on the party members to remain calm and resolute.

A prospective gubernatorial candidate in the state, Mr. Michael Zira, had asked INEC to clarify whether elections would be held for Governor Murtala Nyako's seat in January 2011.

Gov Nyako had also said three weeks ago during a local radio programme "Taba-Kidi-Taba Karatu" that there would be no election in Adamawa until 2012.

"The constitution of Nigeria has spelt it out that my first tenure will come to an end in 2012 not 2011 as widely speculated," he said.

But while the state PDP seeks redress, one of its prospective gubernatorial candidates, Dr Umar Ardo Jada, has described the new amendment in the electoral act as a "good development."

He said it has cleared the air on the ambiguities of whether or not election would hold in Adamawa by 2011.

Also commenting, the state chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) Alh Umaru Duhu hailed INEC's position saying "it will help in having synchronized elections."
