The Government has started paying out project allowances to Copperbelt University (CBU) students.
Copperbelt University Students Union (COBUSU) president, Mark Munafumpa confirmed to the TIMES yesterday that the students started receiving their delayed projects allowances more than a week ago. Mr Munafumpa said about half of the eligible students had so far been paid their project allowances as of this week.
He, however, was not in position to state how students had so far been paid as he was out of campus. "What I know is that the students started receiving the project allowances and about half of those eligible have received funds," he said. Mr Munafumpa said the delay by some students to receive their project allowances could probably be due to issues of payment process and procedures as the students held accounts with different banks.
CBU registrar, Allan Ilunga also confirmed in a separate interview that the problem of payments of project allowances had been resolved as sponsored students had started receiving their monies a week ago.
Mr Ilunga said the bursaries committee confirmed to his office the posting of project allowances to the students' respective bank's accounts. He said the only thing was that the payments were being done according to respective banks time frame of paying. Last month, CBU was characterised with students' disturbances, which were in protest over delays in payments of project allowances.
