Kampala — With approximately 24 hours before Uganda confronts Angola in a must-win Nations Cup qualifier tomorrow, Cranes boss Bobby Williamson finds himself with a 'selection nightmare' he would rather have than not.
Of course, the Scot knows the skeleton of his first team, but will struggle on whom to leave out in three specific areas of the team.
The team's strength in depth has been augmented by the not only the remarkable performances of Robert Odongkara in goal, but defensively, in the heart of midfield and attack, where Williamson has to decide to go with a lone striker in Geoffrey Massa, or start with a two-man attack, with Geoffrey Sserunkuuma floating just behind him.
"It's a difficult job but I have no concerns. It's you (the media) that will have concerns about the depth available and not me. I know my team," Williamson said yesterday.
In goal, Denis Onyango will retain his starting place although Odongkara is such a capable deputy that Onyango will not be excused for any school boy errors.
At the back, seasoned regulars Ibrahim Sekagya and Andrew Mwesigwa might be automatic starters, although Joseph Owino and Hassan Wasswa have given genuine performances in training to justify consideration. The latter (Sekagya and Mwesigwa) could start simply because it's not a time to experiment.
Remember, the demands of serious international football are so high.
It probably explains why David Obua, never mind his fitness concerns will start on the left-side of midfield ahead of Bengo or Sula Matovu, to primarily offer a counter-balance to the inexperienced Godfrey Walusimbi at left back.
Simeon Masaba had a nightmare outing in the goalless draw against Zambia but there will be no two ways on whether he will start at right-back.
Masaba's dismal display against the Chipolopolo was down to fitness and not inability or inexperience. He seems to have worked on his fitness and his added experience will be a bonus.
The attacking pair of Geoffrey Massa and Mike Sseruumagga would give you pace and intelligence. In midfield, it will all depend on whether Williamson wants to be cautious or go all-out. If it's a cautious strategy (4-5-1), Wasswa and Mude Musa will be serious candidates, with Tony Mawejje seated at the apex and Massa played as a lone striker.
If it's the all-out (4-3-3), then Sserunkuuma might just start alongside Massa. "I am not even sure whether I will play. It will be down to the coach," Obua said.
