Uganda: Electoral Registrar, LC3 Chief Arrested Over Electoral Malpractices

Kampala — Michael Eriya, the electoral registrar of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Kiryandongo district has been arrested over electoral malpractices, the Police has said.

The acting district Police commander, Hamis Kyenyodo Lukanga, said Eriya was arrested with Rose Mary Matunda, the Kigumba sub-county LC3 chairperson, by the Rapid Response Unit on Thursday.

"We arrested them in Kigumba town council. They are still in jail as investigations continue to find out what really happened," Lukanga said

The Police are also searching for the NRM district registrar, Patrick Kyomya, who is said to have disappeared before declaring the district electoral results. But Kyomya said on phone that he was in hiding because his life was in danger.

"I could not release the result because some politicians were threatening to kill me. So I took off. I will release them in Kampala," he said.

George Baitera Maiteki, one of the candidates who contested in the NRM primaries for Kibanda county, said some of his colleagues were after Kyomya because they feared that they had lost.
