Nigeria: Reports On Election Guidelines Upset PDP

The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the second time yesterday denied media reports stating that it had released guidelines for the conduct of primaries for the 2011 general elections.

Daily Trust however gathered that the party is upset because it could not find out how the draft copy of the guidelines which are yet to be released got to the press.

The party, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali, said the reports are false.

The statement reads: "In view of the confusion that the reports have created among Nigerians, particularly, among PDP members, we wish to state categorically that the purported "guidelines" published in newspapers are false and have no bearing whatsoever to the PDP.

"For the avoidance of doubt, guidelines for the conduct of primaries are still being processed and are dependent on the release of a comprehensive electoral timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

"PDP guidelines shall be released after due rectification by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party which shall be meeting soon."

The party advised all its members to disregard any published guidelines and await the final decision of the NEC on the issue.
