The National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP) has called on the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) to assist in giving child victims of trafficking in its shelters access to education.
The Executive Secretary of the agency, Barrister Simon Chuzi Egede, made the call yesterday when he visited the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr. A. Moddibo Mohammed, in Abuja.
He said some of the victims of trafficking are very young and of school age and so the agency deems it important to partner with UBEC to see that they have access to the universal basic education which is compulsory and free up to junior secondary school.
He said this will go a long way in having their lives back to normal.
Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr. A. Moddibo Mohammed, represented by the Deputy Executive Secretary, Technical, Professor Charles Onocha, assured NAPTIP of the commission's readiness to partner with it in areas of child education.
He promised to work out modalities to integrate the rescued children in the NAPTIP shelters into school and commended the agency for its dogged fight against trafficking.
He advised it to also take its mobilization to remote villages of the country so that the young ladies will be educated on the evils of prostitution and trafficking.
