Ibadan — Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole, a renowned Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan was yesterday named the next vice-chancellor of the University of Ibadan.
An announcement by the Governing Council of the university explained that Professor Adewole will take over from the out-going vice-chancellor of the institution, Professor Olufemi Bamiro, on the completion of his five-year tenure on December 1, 2010.
Addressing newsmen on the university campus, the pro-chancellor and chairman of the Governing Council, Chief Wole Olanipekun, said the appointment of Professor Adewole followed a rigorous exercise that lasted about seven months, during which about 12 applicants for the office were thoroughly screened.
With the pro-chancellor at the news conference were the incumbent vice-chancellor, Professor Bamiro; the registrar, Mrs Omotayo Ikotun and members of the University Council.
While maintaining that the name of the vice-chancellor designate would soon be forwarded to the Visitor of the institution, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, for endorsement, Chief Olanipekun disclosed that the 56-year-old Professor Adewole emerged the best candidate among the 12 that were interviewed.
Chief Olanipekun further told newsmen that the selection team complied with all the laws and the due process necessary, saying nobody was shut out of the exercise. "Rather, we tried as much as possible to accommodate everyone. We advertized and allowed a level-playing ground," he said.
