Ahead of the 2011 general elections, the Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) has commenced a sensitization campaign against electoral violence and crime in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The National Commandant of the corps, Ambassador Dickson Akoh, disclosed this while speaking to journalists at the corps headquarters in Abuja.
Akor, explained that the campaign which would be taken to the 36 states was aimed at fostering peace among Nigerians as electioneering campaigns take off in full swing, noting that aspirants from diverse backgrounds were already heating up the polity.
According to him, the corps was committed to ensuring that peace is promoted in the country as it is the bedrock of development and sustainable democracy.
"The national executive members of this organisation have resolved to join all relevant agencies and change agents in Nigeria, as well as international organistions to continue to propagate the principle of social justice", Akoh stated.
He appealed to Nigerian youths to take advantage of the on-going political reform and electioneering process to prove that they are capable of influencing the emergence of the much needed truly nationalistic, progressive, God-fearing and credible leader.
The helmsman of the corps charged his members in all the states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to conduct themselves properly and focus on activities that would help in achieving the aims and objectives of the organistaion.
"I wish to remind our members that Peace Corps of Nigeria is not a security out-fit, as such they should indulge in activities that could give security agencies the room to clamp down on the organistaion.
The controversial debate on zoning, the national commandant said was unnecessary, noting that it was a distraction from the popular wish of Nigerians "who desire change, indeed change in the right direction.
"Let us be wise this time around by supporting a credible leader who means well for Nigeria and will carry the youths along in all his policies and programmes, especially those that will impact positively on the generality of youths", he stated.
