Uganda: Nancy is Antidote to Tiresome Day

Nancy Kacungira is one of the unsung jewels in Uganda's radio industry. It is quite rare to find a radio presenter who combines great voice, natural accent, proper English, intelligence and content.

Once, when she described Nancy, Becky Nantale, who works with her at Power FM, said: "If there is anyone who can turn a show around, it is Nancy." Nancy does the Tonight Show at Power FM between 7p.m and midnight. She has been a presenter for nearly five years but has no training in broadcasting. She seems to have a natural knack for it. Nancy studied Industrial and Fine Art at Makerere University, graduating with a first class degree in 2006.

It was while at university in 2003 that she started presenting. She voiced an advert for KFM and the Production Manager, Joseph Beyanga advised her to try out radio because she had a great radio voice.

A Christian, she was worried about working for secular stations and she chose to work at Power FM because it is a Christian station. Nancy, who has since presented the Games On show with Kenneth 'Pablo' Kimuli and the Power FM Breakfast show with Pablo again, says her first show was "awful" and "could not believe that she was let back."

Ben Mwiine, the programmes director at that time, quickly showed her about the machines in the studio, told her he would be back in five minutes but he never returned. She had to sweat it out during her first show, a weekend show. However, as she progressed, she began to enjoy presenting and the Games On show was particularly fun.

She learnt to be serious during the morning show because Pablo had to remain funny while she had to bring some seriousness to the show. She left Power FM in 2008 for Leeds University where she studied International Communications. She hopes to do a PhD.

"For me, studying is not about using the knowledge I have acquired as a stepping stone to a better job; it is about allowing me to grow as a person, an intellectual. It is about expanding my knowledge. I like to read and learn."

She returned to Power FM this year and describes her job a privilege because she gets to play all that wonderful music, talk to all those great people and professes profound love for radio.

"When I am away from it, I miss it."

In addition to radio, Nancy is a businesswoman (together with sister Seanice Kacungira; they own a salon - Suqa). She is also a graphics designer, artist and dancer. She attended Namasagali College where she learnt to dance though her father transferred her to Taibah College School because he said she was just dancing at Namasagali. After Taibah, she went to Kibuli Secondary School.

Nancy advises people not to take life too seriously. "Don't put yourself in a box before others do it for you. Enjoy life," she says.
