Keetmanshoop — The combination of the Southern Youth Choir, Generations.com, Martin Luther High School and Omaruru Western Youth choirs resulted in divine providence. The combined group created a worship of deity with their peculiar cartel sound. Hearing such surpassing excellence in the highest degree turns the unappreciated into the truly appreciated with supreme admiration - the sound these choirs create is like an inspiration by the cherubs.
"We are using this combined group as a type of promotion and synergy as well as a way of fund-raising.
"The ultimate idea is to establish youth choirs in all thirteen regions, under the umbrella of Generations.com," said Dave Karuhumba, Choir conductor of the Generations.com Youth Choir and mastermind behind the initiative.
According to Karuhumba, the choral music industry is rather new to most Namibians and young people in particular and therefore their actual focus will be on scholars and out-of-school youth.
"We want to get the youth of the streets away from shebeens, discos, bars and other places that attract social evils. These young people have got talent and we need to find a proper way to nurture the talent of the Namibian youth - we need to combine potential with possibility.
"We also combined efforts with other choir conductors in order to share musical theories, sound and music. I, personally learn a lot from other skilled conductors, they have a way of marrying innovation with entertainment . We started this initiative in the north at Otavi, central at Otjiwarongo and now the south in Keetmanshoop" he said.
Karuhumba said he is currently challenged by alcohol and drug abuse in his group and at times these habits and ill-behavior result in young, gifted persons being expelled from the choir. He named the group's' biggest challenge as finances for their attire, transport, meals and accommodation during their trips.
"Joining the Generations.com effort is an opportunity for young Namibians to live their aspirations and talent through dance, drama and choreography with music," said Karuhumba.
Generations.com is a Namibian School Choir Commission registered with the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture.
The combined choir also engaged in a music sharing workshop, whereafter they entertained the Keetmanshoop public in town at the street corner and ended their day with a rocking performance in one of the local church halls in the Tseiblaagte neighborrhood later that evening. The group also traveled to Lüderitz.
