Africa: Namibia Still in Driving Seat

Windhoek — After a well-deserved breather yesterday, participating nations in the ICC Africa U19 CWCQ, underway in Windhoek, will move into the next gear, when play resumes this morning.

The opening four days of cricket produced uninterrupted play in all 16 matches so far - meaning the rest day was used for recuperation rather than rectification.

Hosts Namibia continued their fine run of form when the fired-up youngsters won their 4th straight match, this time against Tanzania.

After winning the toss, the visitors elected to bat and despite finding themselves in some trouble early on at 51/5, Tanzania managed 146 all out.

Left-arm seamer, Zhivago Groenwalt, was the pick of the bowlers with a return of 3 for 20 in 9 overs, while Gerhard Lotter impressed with the bat again by scoring a modest 31, the highest score for the Namibian batsmen.

The hosts passed the total in the 41st over to win comfortably by 5 wickets.

Elsewhere, Kenya stumbled on day four after they suffered their first match on Namibian soil against eastern neighbours, Uganda, by 7 wickets.

They Kenyans were inserted by Uganda and could only manage a paltry 155 in their allotted 50 overs.

Uganda started their pursuit of the target and scored 113 for 3, which stabilized their batting as they cruised past the target with five wickets in hand.

At the United oval, plucky Zambia set a very gameful 162/10 against southern neigbours Botswana, who set about their run chase to reach 72/2 and finally got the total for 7 wickets.

In the most exciting match of the day, Nigeria was stopped right in their tracks by a disciplined Sierra Leone team.

Winning the toss, the Nigerians decided to bat that saw them setting a fine target of 200 but Sierra Leone's bats men passed the total in the 44th over and won the closely contested affair by 2 wickets.
