No nation on earth is without developmental challenges and problems. The advanced countries of this world have once travelled the trajectory our dear nation Ghana is charting and were equally buffeted by all the scourges one could imagine. But what catapulted most of them to greater heights were strong institutions which fulfilled their expected roles designed for them by society.
If institutions perform their defined roles creditably, societies become stabilized, orderliness is ensured and progress becomes a possibility. This is one of the compelling and countless reasons why Ghana as a country must have strong and functional institutions.
This week through the role of media, arguably an emerging social institution, the predicament of some disadvantaged and financially challenged children have been addressed or is about to be solved.
By bringing to light the plight of the two visually impaired children who were always found with their mother begging for alms at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, TV3 was able to jolt the public into action and had people to donate towards the correction of the children's sight. The children are now recuperating at the Osu Children's Home, the institution whose managers have come under a blitz of caustic attacks following Anas Aremeyaw Anas of the New Crusading Guide expose' on the Home's maltreatment, mishandling, and abuse of the inmates.
Through his undercover investigative journalism, Anas has brought to light the hellish conditions in which the unfortunate children live at the institution paradoxically called a home! The Attorney General and the Minister for Employment have both indicated that the issue will be thoroughly investigated and the appropriate sanctions will be applied where necessary.
In our own small way, we have been championing the plight of one Grace Akatame (see front page) who has developed a heart problem and has successfully undergone surgery, but needed money to defray her bills. Our stories together with the efforts of others have in a way helped Grace.
The media is thus discharging its responsibilities, thereby helping society to move along on the right path. These are clear manifest examples of what functioning institutions can achieve. We must all aim to strive for the best and loathe any condition that holds us back as nation. For instance, the miscreants of Osu Children's Home who were caught by Anas prying camera have no business being there. Public Agenda believes that, we can collectively make it if we stick to the rules and regulations which define our duties and responsibilities to our society.
