Former internally displaced people in Adjumai District have accused the government of neglecting them. The councillor for Pakelle Sub-county, one of the worst affected areas by the LRA war, where at least 30,000 people were displaced, Mr Angeliko Tokuma Buga, said people who returned to their homes have not been given assistance by the government.

He said some people have decided to remain in IDP camps because the government and aid agencies have helped them to return to their homes.

Complaint

Mr Buga said: "What then is the role of the government if it cannot let its citizens recover from wars? We shall not accept this to continue. Enough is enough."

The Office of the Prime Minister is responsible for overseeing the resettlement of internally displaced people in the north. The district chairman, Mr Mark Dulu, in a recent statement complained that Adjumani has not benefited from the President's iron sheet distribution programme, although he said the plan was to facilitate the IDPs to return to their homes.

But Jack Byaruhanga, an official in the office of the Prime Minister, said the government does not plan to give special benefits to people in the north apart from the Peace Recovery and Development Plan, Northern Uganda Social Action Fund and the National Agricultural Advisory Services Programme to enable them recover.
