Uganda: MP Accused of Destroying Votes

The Buvuma Member of Parliament, Mr William Nsubuga, was yesterday interrogated for several hours by police for allegedly destroying election materials meant for NRM primaries in Buvuma Island.

Mr Nsubuga was arrested on Monday after he allegedly destroyed the election materials, leading to suspension of the exercise. The MP is alleged to have grabbed ballot papers from election officials and torn them into pieces before dumping them in the lake.

He was later released on police bond and asked to report to Buikwe district police headquarters at Lugazi, were he appeared yesterday. Ms Nsubuga denied any wrongdoing, saying that he was being framed by his opponents. His bond was extended to Monday. Investigations are going on.

The head of criminal investigations department in Buikwe and Mukono, Mr Henry Ayebare said: "We have extended his bond as our team of investigators dig out more facts regarding the case. We shall later on take him to courts of law after we have put all the facts of this case together."

Mr Ayebare said Nsubuga will be charged with destroying elections materials contrary to the Election Act.
