Windhoek — All roads will lead to the Independence Arena in Katutura tomorrow for a massive music concert dubbed the 'Summer Sound Festival 2010', featuring the talents of some 20 artists, groups and other performers. The show starts at 10h00 and will run until 18h00.
The concert organiser, 'Divine Connection', is a young Christian non-profit company that has set itself the task of tackling community development projects to teach people skills enabling them to earn a living.
And if the excitement of spokespersons of the company, Noel Silver and Müreal van Rooyen, is anything to go by, Divine Connection is sure to grow from strength to strength in a very short time.
They told Art Life that although the company was formed only a short while ago, it has already amassed quite a huge following through its regular prayer teaching sessions held three times a week. The sessions are attended by nearly 200 people and the company has already been able to secure the support of sponsors to enable it to make food parcels for participants in these sessions.
The immediate next step is to start offering classes to teach people to make candles and to do embroidery.
"These are easy to learn skills with which one can, with a little talent and imagination, create beautiful things that can be sold," said Silver. He said the company plans to follow these classes with training in beading, shoe and sandal making, a coffee shop and a small printing works.
"Our greatest aim is to uplift the society by involving members of the community to help themselves," Van Rooyen said.
The young people heading the company first became aware of the plight of the community through the people who attended the prayer teaching sessions they have been conducting for some time now.
"We became aware of the need in the community as we interacted with the people involved in the prayer teachings. We started small, but soon realised we needed to go bigger. We feel it is important we should help people in such a way they can help themselves, and that is why we have decided to equip people with skills which they can use to become self-employed. The big idea is to help people to help themselves," Van Rooyen said.
She said their activities would not be confined to Windhoek and that they plan to extend their work to other regions as well. Some of their other plans include doing a road show to introduce the company to the rest of the country and also to spread the gospel.
The 'Summer Sound Festival 2010' is another way of introducing the company to the public, they said. The show will consist mostly of songs performed by single artists and bands while some creative dancing performances will also be featured. Some of the artists who will perform include Jesse, the Groove Wakeez Dancers, Marcha and Wilfred, Ralph, Ruby Davids, Brumhilda Omgatsy, the G-Band, Louisa, Floris Green and Donovan van Schalkwyk.
