Namibia: Fleeing Bank Manager Could Be in Europe

HENRY Kisting, the former Standard Bank Namibia Rundu manager suspected of having fled the country after allegedly pocketing millions of dollars, is possibly staking it out in Europe.

Kisting is suspected to have hit the road after he allegedly transferred between N$3m and N$5m into foreign bank accounts over an unknown period of time.

He was the manager at this branch in the Kavango capital before he allegedly packed up and disappeared.

It is understood that the alleged fraud was detected after his departure. By then, he was nowhere to be found.

Yesterday the bank's head of marketing, Taddius Maswahu, followed in the footsteps of his colleagues by not being prepared to shed light on the incident which has sent shock waves through the banking sector.

Maswahu said: "Issues like that are internal matters. If it is something that borders on criminality, it is the duty of the Police and is handled by them on that level."

When he was asked over what period Kisting is suspected to have committed the fraud and what is being done to curb such incidents in future, Maswahu said: "We cannot divulge any information on that."

He said employees who are found guilty of any transgressions are being dealt with internally. "They are sorted out in this way."

On Tuesday, a Police spokesperson, Chief Inspector Angula Amulungu, confirmed the incident.

According to him a case of fraud was registered with the Namibian Police at Rundu in July already.

Amulungu said that he too could not reveal more information as the investigation was at a "sensitive stage".

He said, "it would likely jeopardise the investigation. This person is still at large and by revealing more information, we will keep him from handing himself over."

He appealed to Kisting to "come back".

"Tell this fellow to come back, because he has been playing hide and seek [with the Police]," Amulungu said.

On Tuesday, Standard Bank's manager: forensic services, Roman Bock, could not understand why he was approached for comment.

"What's the point of me informing you if you have [already] spoken to the Police. I have nothing to tell you. I don't think it is appropriate," he fumed.
