Uganda/Angola: Cranes Shift Guns to Harambee Stars

Kampala — If Uganda are to finally break the 34-year-old murky, then Saturday's display by the Cranes where they cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Angola should be reciprocated in subsequent away games.

While the scoreline might mask some of the lapses in concentration, wastefulness in front of goal and occasional blind passing - it happens even with the best - the game had more positives than shortcomings.

Skipper Ibrahim Sekagya's majesty and Andy Mwesigwa's steel deactivated Godfrey Walusimbi's occasional flaws. The duo also covered for Simeon Masaba when Angolan winger Ricardo Estevao Job was too much for the right back.

Tony Mawejje was resplendent in the middle while Vincent Kayizzi's trickery dazed whoever came in red. David Obua and Andy Mwesigwa were on target but it's the six-touch passing move in the build-up to Geoffrey Sserunkuma's goal that caught the eye. The same mettle, self belief, grand build ups, crisp finishing, and classic goalkeeping from Denis Onyango should now be exhibited against Kenya on October 9 for Uganda's first away win since beating Malawi 2-1 in 2001. No wonder Bobby Williamson's attacking style is manifesting results and Uganda are now scoring goals from open play.

"That's our style and that's how we've always approached our games. If you have to win, you have to attack," he said. "And I don't believe in those that say we don't score. We score goals. Sserunkuma and Brian (Umony) came on and were involved in a goal. We have the strikers."

The Cranes now have to urgently resume training for the Kenya game if they are to stave off a Harambee Stars side fresh from an opening 1 - 0 loss away to Guinea Bissau. Uganda top group J and should remain there to be sure of qualification.
