Zambia: MP Warns Against Abuse of CDF

SOLWEZI West Constituency Member of Parliament (MP), Humphrey Mwanza has warned that action will be taken against anyone abusing the Constituency Development Funds (CDF).

Mr Mwanza, who is on a tour of development projects in his constituency, said while CDF was generally being used on intended projects, mishandling of the fund would not be tolerated.

"Most of the CDF has been used on intended projects except in one or two areas; we want to ensure greater accountability and where CDF has been misused- action will be taken," he said.

Mr Mwanza, who is MMD Deputy Parliamentary Chief whip, said the first round of his tour revealed that while Government was taking development to the area including building, road infrastructure needed to be worked on.

He appealed to Government to urgently work on the road network in Musele ward before the start of the rainy season, especially the road from Chovwe to Wamafwa through Ifumpa.

He said a tour of Kalengelenge, which is 180km from Solwezi and a km from the Democratic Republic of Congo, revealed that the area was an agricultural centre producing a lot of maize, beans and many other crops.

"The people require transporting their produce to Solwezi, but unfortunately the road between Chief Mukumbi's palace and Mangala and Kalengelenge is in a bad state," Mr Mwanza said.

He said Mumbezhi Bridge needed to be immediately worked on in Mukumbi Ward, as it may affect activities in the area including construction of a 1X2 classroom block at Kansonde.

And during the tour which started on August 25 and ends this weekend, people expressed concerns that some councillors were not visiting their wards.
