Uganda: SCOUL Workers Strike Over Pay

Kampala — Over 500 workers of the Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited (SCOUL) in Lugazi, Buikwe District, on Friday went on a strike, demanding for proper working conditions and a wage increment.

Armed with pangas and big sticks, the workers went to the SCOUL head offices and beat up their colleagues who were working, saying they did not have a spirit of solidarity.

The secretary of the National Union of Plantation and Agriculture Workers of Uganda, John Atuma, talked to the workers and calmed them down. He, however, noted that the workers have genuine complaints that should be addressed.
