Windhoek — Namibia as hosts of the ICC Africa CWCQ Division One Tournament made a clean sweep of the competition in Windhoek yesterday when they beat Nigeria by 255 runs, ending up as the only unbeaten team in seven matches.
The tournament took place at the Wanderers Oval in the capital.
Uganda flattered to deceive, as they were easily sent packing by Namibia on day 6 on Saturday.
A determined Namibian team, arguable the best prepared team, set a very effective 260/8 in their 50 overs. The batters managed to get positive partnerships going, and greatly capitalized on this.
Uganda did not manage to get any effective partnerships into action. At one stage they were floundering at 69/5 and were eventually bowled out for 141. Namibia headed the log table on 12 points upon completion of day 6 of the proceedings.
Botswana, day 6 big scorers, tried by all means to capitalize on the batting momentum after they won the toss and elected to bat in their match against Tanzania. This tactic worked to their advantage as they managed to get 209.
Siddhat Rangaswary top scored with a wonderful 83. Tanzanian batting struggled badly, as they tried in vain to chase the set target.
They soon found themselves in trouble at 107/6 with 12 overs remaining. Some extremely quick over rates saw the Tanzanian batsmen lose the plot somewhat and they were bowled out for 134 in the 45th over.
In other action, Kenya found themselves up against a motivated Nigerian bowling attack. On the now tame oval wicket, Kenya managed to squeak the 214 mark. Some indifferent batting saw Nigeria slump to 61/5 in the 27th over. They never managed to reignite the motivation cricket enthusiasts saw in the bowling. Kenya were simply too skilled for them and bowled them out for 94.
At the United Oval, Zambia continued with positive play under South African coach Peter Kirsten. Winning the toss, the fast improving Zambians elected to bat first, but only managed to set Sierra Leone a conservative 147 in 47 overs to chase.
Initially, this did not seem to be enough for Sierra Leone on a very good batting strip. However, they seemed to slip back into their now all-too- familiar routine, a self-destructive batting mode. In the 33rd over, Sierra Leone was floundering at 87/7, but managed to recover to 133 all out - still 15 runs short of the target.
In the top-of-the-table clash, Namibia confronted Kenya in a match that was always going to be a real test of character for the unbeaten home team, when play resumed on day 5 on Friday.
Starting their assault with a disciplined bowling display, the visitors restricted the Namibian batting to 188 in their 50 overs. However, Gerhard Lotter came to the rescue of the hosts once again with 52.
