Gambia: Gamcotrap Train 30 Journalists On Harmful Traditional Practices And Domestic Violence

In their bid to educate and sensitize the masses on harmful traditional practices and domestic violence, The Gambia committee on harmful traditional practices has organised a 3 day capacity building for journalists, managers and editors at Boabab Holiday resort on 2-4 September on the theme 'adequate and reliable information on cross-cutting issues'.

According to the Executive Director of GAMCOTRAP, the complications of FGM are enormous and grave; she said the media needs to play a critical role in shaping opinion and also creating awareness of the general public.

She stated that: "As practitioners you have a stake in bringing about the right change and contributing to the advancement of women and children". She further stated that those working with the community radios can also influence the discourse on FGM, the taboo surrounding the practice has been long broken, and this gives a leeway for the media to engage in sensitization in your radio stations, she appealed.

The GAMCOTRAP Executive Director said "however, you must first believe in the advocacy and adhere to the principles of protecting women and children in the midst of resistance." She said that women and men alike depend on the information given through your medium, therefore, she said a social change revolution for ending FGM also lies in your hands.
