Lagos — The Nigerian Gas Association (NGA) has cautioned the federal government against undue politicization of the implementation of the national power industry roadmap it recently launched.

The association's President-elect Engineer Chima Ibeneche, gave the advice at a press briefing in Lagos at the weekend ahead of its 7th Biennial International Gas Conference and Exhibition in Abuja.

President Goodluck Jonathan recently in Lagos unveiled the roadmap which aims to revamp the nation's power sector.

The development will also see government disposing 51 per cent of its stakes in the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) to the private sector. The government would still maintain its hold on transmission.

Ibeneche said the roadmap should be implemented with urgency and purpose.

Applauding the Federal government over the upward review in the minimum price of gas for gas producers and deregulation of the natural gas prices for the manufacturers, he urged that similar efforts be fashioned in delivering gas to the domestic sector.

He called for the expansion of jetty, storage and transport infrastructure for cooking gas to facilitate distribution to every part of the country.

He further advised the government to invest in key infrastructure that can jump-start the development of the gas business in various areas.

"An area where this can happen is in the extension of the national gas transmission trunk line from which minor transmission and distribution lines can organically evolve and feed major cities, towns and projects within Nigeria," he said.
