Despite their 2-0 victory over Madagascar yesterday at the JS Esuene stadium Calabar, Super Eagles have been charged to do more to win back the support and confidence of Nigerian football fans.
A goal each from strikers Obafemi Martins and Michael Enearamo of Esperance of Tunisia gave the Eagles the maximum points as they begin their campaign for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations to be co-hosted by Equitorial Guinea and Gabon.
Speaking to Trustsports moment after the match, former Nigeria Football Association image maker Mr. Austin Mgbolu said the team is yet to wake up completely from slumber as there were still noticeable lapses in the team's outing. He said a lot still needs to be done by the technical crew to bring back the quality the team was known for just as he said Nigerians will again give the team the total support the moment they see the desired changes taking place.
"There are still lots of gaps. The team is yet to wake up completely. Although they won, we cannot pretend that there were no noticeable changes".
He noted that even as the team could not beat the Madagascans convincingly, they deserved the three points that were up for grab.
"Although the players did not convince Nigerians with their performance, they deserved the victory. Let us not forget that the Madagascans did not surrender without a fight. They also wanted something out of the match".
Mgbolu however commended the coach Austin Eguavoen led technical crew on the introduction of new players into the team as he said it is the surest way to re-building the team. He said it is only when new players are given the opportunity to play that they will be able to gain enough exposure and the needed confidence for optimal performance.
"I am happy with the introduction of new players into the team. These players have been given the opportunity to develop their potentials. National team is where excellence is celebrated and young players need opportunities to get there".
Mgbolu maintained that more players should be exposed because Nigeria is blessed with talented footballers who need the opportunity that came the way of Eneji Otekpa, Valentine, Stanley Okoro and Ahmed Musa to prove their worth.
"I urge the coaches not to restrict the chances of other players. More should be given the opportunity to play. If sustained, this country will no longer re-cycle players", he opined.
He urged upcoming players not to rest on their oars but continue to impress so that those who make case for their inclusion in the senior national team will not be disappointed.
