Maputo — The confirmed death toll from last week's riots in Maputo and the neighbouring city of Matola has now risen to 13, according to Health Minister Ivo Garrido.

When Garrido spoke to the press on Friday, he gve the death toll as 10, with 155 injured. On Monday he spoke at another press conference, and said that three more people had died over the weekend.

On Friday, three more people were brought to Maputo Central Hospital, but two of them were dead on arrival. On Sunday night, one man who was in intensive care died of his injuries.

Garrido warned that the death toll could rise still higher, since some of those currently hospitalised are still in a critical condition.

Three of these people were suffering from serious gunshot wounds in the thorax and abdomen. They had all been operated on. Garrido said their condition was evolving positively, "but there is always a risk".
