Gambia: Blood At Bansang Hospital? Patients Need Help

Information reaching this reporter alleges that the Bansang Hospital, the oldest hospital in the provinces, is now operating without adequate stock of blood since the beginning of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

This situation, according to hospital sources, could put the lives of the patients, especially those in the maternity ward, at stake as they may be badly in need of blood for their survival.

When this reporter contacted the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bansang Hospital, Mr. Babucarr Jammeh, to shed light on the veracity of this alarming and live threatening claim, his response was that the hospital is a facility that comprises different units. He said he cannot tell whether blood is available or not at the blood bank unless he finds out.

This reporter, however, was told that there is inadequacy of blood at the hospital's blood bank. It is added that Central River Region (CRR) is considered a very good donor region when it comes to blood donation but that because of the Ramadan, voluntary blood donors are not forthcoming. This, he said, is what has made the blood bank and the entire hospital to be faced with this critical situation.

The sources appeal to this reporter to appeal to blood donors to come to the aid of the hospital by donating blood to save lives.

Editor's Note

Under normal circumstances we would have withheld this report until the Chief Executive Officer of Bansang Hospital authenticates or dismisses the report. It is released because of the intention to motivate people to donate blood. Whether the information is correct or not, it would not do any harm if it is published to encourage blood donors to give more blood. Foroyaa adds its voice to call for more blood donors for Bansang Hospital.
