Uganda: Candidate Dies After Losing

Buyende — Voting and election results in Ikanda parish in Buyende District turned tragic after one of the losers died soon after declaration of the results. James Nteeba, 25, a resident of Magogo zone, Ikanda parish, lost to the incumbent parish councillor Viriane Galira.

Ms Aisha Kanaku, a councillor, said Nteeba had sold part of his land to facilitate his campaign. "He was scared of accounting for the family property, so he developed pressure and died. It is very unfortunate that elections have been commercialised," she said. Mr Kanaku Michael the interim LC5 Chairperson polled 34,199 votes to become flag- bearer.

In Budiope East, incumbent MP Suleiman Balyejjusa, won with 23,299 votes against Mr John Nsega's 7,397. Budiope West went to John Bosco Mubiito. The district woman MP flag bearer slot was taken by Ms Veronica Babirye Kadogo, who polled 28,116 votes in disputed elections.

Meanwhile, drama unfolded at a polling station at Nawampiti when a candidate, Mr Khiza Mpendo, allegedly kicked ballot boxes after he was declared loser in the race for LC1 councillor.
