Nigeria: NABTEB Releases May/June Exam Results

Benin — The National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) has released the May/June 2010 National Business Certificate and National Technical examination results.

Registrar and Chief Executive of NABTEB, Dr Latunji Aworanti, said of the 63,612 candidates that sat for the examinations, 20,554 had five credits including English Language and Mathematics, adding that the overall results recorded a decrease of 4.15 per cent failure rate against the previous year.

"In education, out of the 61,775 candidates who sat for English Language, 33,918 (54.9%) passed at credit level and above. In Mathematics, out of the 61,846 candidates who sat for the examination, 33,682 (54.5%) passed at credit level and above. Literature-in-English recorded the highest failure rate of 41.85% in General Education subject. In Engineering Trades, while Vehicle Body Building recorded the best performance, candidates performed poorly in Marine Engineering Craft and Foundry Craft Practice. In Business Trades, the candidates performed creditably well in Commerce, Office Practice and Salesmanship", he said.

The examination was conducted in 861 centres across the country as against 697 centres in 2009 (an increase of 24%), according to Dr. Aworanti.

He said a total of 63,612 candidates enrolled for the examinations representing an increase of 32.41% over the 2009 enrolment of 48,042 candidates.

The NABTEB boss told journalists that the examination body was not resting on its oars in reducing examination malpractice as virtually all members of staff, ad-hoc staff, governing board members and other stakeholders were engaged in monitoring the examinations.

He said the board recorded 1,389 malpractice cases in 2010 as against 3,883 in 2009 representing a decrease of 64.23 per cent.
