As reactions continue to trail the unimpressive Super Eagles 2-0 victory over Madagascar last Sunday, former Super Falcons handler, Jossy Lad has pleaded with Nigerians to be patient with the team.
Speaking with Trustsports in a telephone interview yesterday, Jossy said while most Nigerians may not be satisfied with the performance of the Austin Eguavoen-led team, the victory it secured is what is important now that the team is being rebuilt.
"They may not have played very well, but they got the three points at stake. At this point that we are trying to rebuild the senior national team, we should not expect everything to be perfect. The major thing should be victory, which may come in an unconvincing manner.
"Last Sunday was the first competitive match the team has played since their ouster at the South Africa 2010. More so, they are now playing under a different handler, which means it will be very difficult for them to play free-flow football.
"Nigerians should be very patient with the Eagles and support them as they are undergoing another transition period under a new handler. It takes time for work on the chemistry of a team," former 3SC FC coach said.
He commended Coach Eguavoen for using two home-based players in the match, urging any coach that takes over from him to take a cue by making use of some good local players to prosecute the remaining African Nations Cup qualifying campaign.
"Eguavoen used two home-based players against Madagascar and they gave good account of themselves. If given more opportunities, there are a number of such players that can play at any level of football, if encouraged and exposed. We saw what Ghana did in South Africa with some home-based players in their fold. That is how to build a good team, not by depending solely on foreign-based players.
"Playing in matches like that will help to boost the confidence of the local players and with many of them in the team; the problem of having to always depend on foreign legion will become a thing of the past," he said.
