Tanzania: Stars Need Three Wins to Qualify

Dar es Salaam — THREE wins at home could end Taifa Stars' 30-year wait to feature in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals after Morocco, the other group D's bigwig, were held to a shocking goalless draw by the Central African Republic.

Morocco could not take advantage of the draw game between group rivals Algeria and Tanzania, and that of playing at home, leaving everything open in the group.

Taifa Stars, regarded as underdogs alongside Central African Republic, got their campaign off to a dream start after successful holding their hosts Algeria to a 1-1 draw in group D of the ongoing Orange 2012 Afcon qualifiers.

After the first weekend of the continental qualifiers, Tanzania and Algeria top their group with a goal on hand apiece, while Morocco and Central African Republic are in third and fourth respectively after they fired blanks.

Whilst the results suggests that, Algeria and Morocco are no longer invincible of the group as initially feared, it was also a great advantage for Tanzania as the country vies to end a long wait to compete at the continent's premium championship.

It means that, should Taifa Stars seize home advantage and take three wins out of their three home matches, they will muster 10 points, a tally that could see them heading to Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, co-hosts of the 2012 AFCON finals.

Next up for Jan Poulsen's men are the Atlas Lions, the match scheduled for November 9 and they will also play their third match at home against Central African Republic in March, next year.

Speaking to the 'Daily News' on Monday, Taifa Stars striker, Danny Mrwanda acknowledge that Morocco is a must win game as Stars will be looking to build on their perfect start.

Mrwanda said, "Morocco will be a different game and certainly a different approach from us. We want to win and one should expect an offensive game. "Against Algeria we're purely a defensive team, but that will change against Morocco, we'll be playing at home, I think we'll be all out from the word go."

Mrwanda, who plies his trade in Vietnam, pleaded for friendly matches as he believes they will help instill more confidence in the squad.

"We've got so many good players in the squad, but some still lacks confidence and experience, I think with more international friendly games against big teams they can build their confidence," he said.

The former Simba striker believes that playing abroad has helped him gain much needed confidence, "I'm not afraid playing against anyone, we should cast away our fears, Algeria, Morocco are like any other team, you just need to know how to play against them."

Mrwanda urged soccer fans to rally behind their team and support them in the course of the campaign. "Tanzanians should be supportive towards their team, and they should only criticize when criticism is warranted," he said.

Taifa Stars have dissolved camp and will assemble ahead of the home game against Morocco in November. Only the group winner is assured qualification for the 2012 finals.
