Ghana: Black Maidens Stumble Against Canada

Ghana's hopes of getting their campaign at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup off to flier failed as the Black Maidens lost 1-0 to Canada in Arima.

Though often looking the better side, the Black Maidens threatened first as Alice Danso's effort from the left flank was met with a fine save by Canada's Sabrina D'Angelo after 18 minutes.

The North Americans barely had an effort at goal as Ghana captain Beatrice Sesu had three chances in quick succession, all shots from distance.

Canada resorted to playing on the break and it paid off though against the run of play.

From a corner-kick after a counter-attack, Haisha Cantave nodded in to put Canada in the lead. And that goal separated both sides till the final whistle in their Group D opener.

Ghana will be eager to get their first point on Thursday when they take on Brazil, who beat the Republic of Ireland 2-1 in the other group game.
