Liberia: President Sirleaf Dines With Muslims

Monrovia — President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Friday, September 3, dined with Liberian Muslims at the C. Cecil Dennis Auditorium in observance of the Muslim Holy Month of Ramadan.

Addressing Imams and other Muslim leaders, the President said she was glad to join Muslims at the dinner table as they observe the fast month. She lauded the Imams for the many sacrifices they continued to make in fasting for the nation and its people.

The President reminded the Muslim community to remain law-abiding citizens. "All Liberians are equal under the laws of this country regardless of social, religious, or tribal affiliations," the President reiterated, offering assurances that her Government will continue to protect and uphold all freedoms enshrined in the Constitution, including freedom of religion.

The Liberian leader urged Muslims to continue playing a constructive role in the reconstruction process, as the country moves toward a better Liberia for all.

Responding, a leader of the Muslim community, Sheikh Kafumba Konneh, praised the Liberian leader for the gesture, observing that the occasion was the first of its kind in the history of Liberia: to have a sitting President break the fast with them at the seat of Government.

Sheikh Konneh recounted the many development programs being undertaken by the Johnson Sirleaf administration, pointing, most specifically, to the construction of the road leading to the once notorious Bella Yella prison compound, a facility that is now being transformed into a resource center.

The Muslim cleric recalled that President Johnson Sirleaf has always demonstrated her love for the Muslim community, "not only by breaking the fast with us but by joining us even in our prayer services."

Sheikh Konneh called on all Muslims to forget the past and join the Government in rebuilding the country's shattered institutions.

The occasion was attended by Islamic scholars and Imams from the various mosques in Montserrado County. University of Liberia Professor Alhaji G.V. Kromah and Planning Minister Amara Konneh also attended the dinner.
