Uganda: LC5 Chairman Attacked

Kampala — The interim LC5 chairman, Namayingo district, Willy Obondo has been admitted in hospital after he was attacked by a group of thugs on Monday.

He was addressing a rally at Namayingo trading centre. He sustained deep cuts on the head, hands and back. The thugs reportedly had been armed with machetes and iron bars. Obondo said the attack was influenced by rival politicians.

The district resident district commissioner, Margret Mwanamoiza said two people had been arrested in connection with the attack on the chairman. Mwanamoiza said the attack could have been politically motivated since the thugs never took away anything after the attack.

Elections for the NRM party flag bearers for Namayingo district are expected to be held today after previously failing to take off on two occasions. Elections in the district has before caused tension between politicians and supporters opposed to the incumbent member of parliament, Bukooli south,Patrick Ochieng and those opposed to him.

Recently seven people were seriously injured during a violent clash between supporters of Ochieng and another contestant, Stephen Dede after the latter accused the former for influencing the delay of elections of the party flag bearers.
