Director General of the National Sports Commission, Chief Patrick Ekeji yesterday refused to announce the number of medals Nigerians should expect from the country's contingent to the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, insisting that Nigeria's target remains to emerge the best among African countries to the games.
Addressing the press yesterday in Abuja on the country's preparations for the Games, the DG said Nigerian athletes would perform well at the Commonwealth Games and so the idea of pegging their performance to a specific number of medals to be hauled at the games would not serve any purpose.
"Stating the number of medals that we hope to win will not serve any purpose. Our desire is to do well at the Games and emerge the best out of African countries that will be participating.
"Going by the recent performances of our athletes, we would not fail to win medals. We are the best in badminton, strong in table tennis, wrestling and weightlifting. At the last world championship, one of our wrestlers in his first outing at that level won a bronze medal", Ekeji stated.
He said other African countries like South Africa would be taking part in the Games and Nigeria is hoping to win more medals in order to emerge the best country from Africa.
Meanwhile, Ekeji confirmed that Nigeria would be participating in seven events namely, athletics, boxing, badminton, para-sports (athletics, power-lifting and table tennis), table tennis, weight lifting and wrestling. He said the chosen events are in the country's area of strength in sports and would not fail to bring the desired results.
Ekeji added that the final list of athletes who would be representing the country in the various events has been submitted, just as he said after due consultations, the NSC settled for the Haigeng Physical Training Base in Kunming, China for the final camping exercise.
