Lafia — The ultra modern medical centre which General Theophilus Danjuma built and donated to Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), is undergoing restructuring in what the university authorities say, "is to suit the taste of the donor."
University spokesman, Jamil Zakari told Daily Trust during a visit to the project that General Danjuma had to award a fresh contract to restructure the facility because he was not satisfied with the design.
"You know it is a gigantic project which the former minister conceived to suit his taste. But because the university handled the design, the finishing was not what he expected, so he decided on another contract to restructure it, and as you can see, work is at its top speed and the project would soon be completed. He has already awarded the contract to equip the hospital", Zakari said.
The former Defence Minister during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, donated a multi-million naira ultra modern medical centre to NSUK as part of his contribution to the university which honored him in 2005 with a doctorate degree. He commissioned the centre earlier in the year, during an elaborate ceremony which was attended by his associates across the country.
The project, South Atlantic Petroleum Medical Centre, named after his company, South Atlantic Petroleum Limited, according to him, is a major concern of the company since it has an ambitious social responsibility programme. He had said the conferment of the honour by the university in 2005, challenged him to commit the company into extending its social responsibility programme to provide the centre for Medicare for the university and its environs. "About two years ago, I was honoured by Nasarawa State University . When I was being conferred with this honour, I met the chairman of the endowment fund. It was at that occasion that I pledged to build this clinic. And I also pledged to equip the clinic.
"This building was designed by the university. So don't blame me if you don't like it. We tried not to change anything on the building. So my architect who became the Project Manager, offered technical advice on how the building can be made more comfortable and as maintenance free as possible.
